‘Concertini per Quattro Voci’
- Eighteenth Century Arias for Four Voices.
Since first discovering Reggio’s name and his subsequent works early in
2000 more and more information has been amassed, and from this acquired
knowledge has emerged some interesting works. One of which is the
subject of this short monograph.
Reggio has been mentioned as a musician by Dr
Charles Burney during his journey to Rome in 1770 and a later by
the poet and writer Giovanni Gherado De Rossi, in 1807. We are
fortunate, however, that Reggio himself left many clues in his own
Antonino Reggio has been described by his
contemporaries as ‘a man of great intellect, erudite, and very deep in
music, eminent for his skill in the art, and learning in the science of
monograph highlights one of Reggio’s works, a manuscript containing
twenty quartets set for three sopranos and contralto.
An unusual feature of this work is
its form and setting. It consists of quartet settings of duets from the
works of Pietro Metastasio, one of the foremost librettists of
‘Opera Seria’of the eighteenth century . The work is unusually set for three
sopranos and a contralto in the ‘duetto notturno’ style. The style was
thought to be introduced in the later eighteenth century (1770) but
this work shows that it was a style used at least a decade earlier.
The current work outlines the history of
the three manuscripts and looks at them in the light of the ‘duetto
notturno’ style. There is a detailed section on the original Metastasio
texts, together with a comprehensive bibliography.
It is planned to be a companion to the forthcoming critical performance
edition, in preparation by the current author. Also it is a prelude to
a more comprehensive biography of Reggio currently in preparation.
